Jaume Ribas
TRAJECTORY
1944–1978
1944
He was born in Palou, a small town in Granollers, a flat place, crossed by the river Congost and oriented to the light reverberating of the Mediterranean.
1961
He entered the Salesian novitiate of the Penedès Tree. She will devote herself to the convent life alternating it with work in the painting workshop. He will make copies of Zurbarán, El Greco and Velázquez. He begins to paint landscapes of nature. He studied classical philosophy.
1964
He painted in Girona a mural in the apse of the chapel of the Salesian nuns.
1966
He moved to Salamanca, where he studied theology at the Pontifical University, studies that will end at the Faculty of Sant Ignasi, in Sant Cugat del Vallès. During these years he continued to paint as an autodidact, copying all versions of Cézanne's Santa Victoria Mountain.
1973-1978
He graduated in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Barcelona.
1978-1981
He studied art in Eina, where he graduated in drawing, painting and engraving. It discovers 20th-century art and a whole range of artistic techniques and approaches. Confused energy.
1980–1990
1982
It was a time of experimentation and (dis)orientation. Seduced by Cézanne and Matisse. Then Mondrian, whose "deductive" painting of progressive geometric simplification captivated him.
1984
He starts working on series of graphic works. She publishes Expiatòria, her first artist's book, with text by Odile Arqué and prologue by Albert Ràfols Casamada.
1987-1990
First time in Berlin. He decides "to be abstract", as if Monet were living with Mondrian. He painted atmospheric paintings in colour, in the all over line, in the manner of De Koonning or Joan Mitchell. It gradually evolved into the Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler style, with more expansive color spots and less brushwork. The international exhibitions begin in Germany, Switzerland, England, and so on.
1990–2005
1995-1997
As a result of this evolution, buildings with colored fringes begin. Crosses and juxtapositions. He continues to develop extensive graphic work and, in 1997, publishes Dèdal, his second bibliophile book, with poems by Antoni Clapés.
2000-2003
His works are part of the collection of "la Caixa", the National Museum of Art of Catalonia and the graphic sections of the British Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles In 2003, he published Les heures de l'or, with texts by Vicenç Altaió, a book published in Catalan and German that was exhibited in the exhibition "VisualKultur.cat", at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt, within the framework of the International Book Fair in Frankfurt in 2007.
2006–Avui
2006
He moves to Foixà, in the Lower Empordà, where he begins a process of revision and synthesis that leads him to the simplification of the pictorial surface and the recovery of the basic geometric forms as rhythms, counterpoints, constructions, divisions and meanings of space, both in the sense of sign and symbolic extension of his geometric message.
2007
He publishes his fourth bibliophile book, The First Cloud, with poems by Josep-Ramon Bach. Miquel Molins presents the book at the artist's workshop in Foixà.
2009
He moves again to Barcelona, where he will develop the ideas and projects started in 2006.
2011
Exhibition at the Centre d'Art Tecla Sala of l'Hospitalet de Llobregat, where a concise review of his work of the last two decades is made, with a special emphasis on the last stage.
2016
Exhibition at the Museum of Montserrat where the passage of the predominance of color, which previously appeared represented in large surfaces broken by lines that related the limits with its interior, to a series of works in black and white that enhance the constructive aspect, is collected.
One of the paintings in the exhibition, Aura gotica, has become part of the Museum's permanent collection.
2018
He painted the Abyss of the chapel of Mary Help of Christians commissioned by the Salesians of Sarrià (Barcelona). Like all of his artistic work, the criteria under which the renovation has been carried out are simplicity, clarity of message and appropriateness to the context.
